"I was humiliated in the shackles. How can I now compose verses? How can I now write?

After the shackles and the nights and the suffering and the tears,

How can I write poetry?

My soul is like a roiling sea, stirred by anguish,

Violent with passion.

I am a captive, but the crimes are my captors'."

--Sami Al Haj in Poetry from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak.

A new collection of poetry written by Guantanamo Bay detainees will be published in late July. Attorney Marc Falkoff, who represents 17 Yemeni prisoners talks with Madeleine Brand about the project. And Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo detainee whose poetry is featured in the collection, talks with Anthony Brooks. Begg was held in Guantanamo for nearly three years, and was released in January 2005 with no charges made against him.
